Konnichiwa! I’m just back from an unexpected but much appreciated trip to Tokyo. I got back into the kitchen yesterday when I put together a batch of hummingbird cupcakes for a good friend’s 30th birthday. They disappeared too quickly for me to photograph them properly! Here’s a couple of snaps of Japanese cuisine and a shot of a project I started on my trip.

This weekend marks five years since I baked a dozen cupcakes, iced them in brightly-coloured frosting, took a few dodgy photos and posted the recipe on my newly-created blog. I think most bloggers are embarrassed by their first post but it is a nice reminder of progress. Why I posted such poorly-lit and composed photos I’ll never know; I did study photography for goodness sake so I knew better! I started the blog just for me, a place to keep notes and memories and secondly to share them with those who were interested.
A lot has happened in the past five years. I’ve travelled, made new friends, developed new hobbies and been to five(!) Bon Jovi concerts. I have loved, been loved and found new things I love. There are lots of changes happening in my life right now, I’m not sure which direction things will go. I know there are possibilities though, lots of them. That feels good.

Unfortunately there has been no baking in Katie’s Kitchen this week. We’ve been moving, so have a new home and a new kitchen. And many, many boxes. As soon as we have unpacked at least a little I’m going to test out the oven. First I’ll have to figure out how the oven works… I owe hubby a birthday cake!
Until then, I’ll leave you with something that always makes me happy – special edition M&Ms! These were released for the recent State of Origin (rugby league competition). Light and dark blue for New South Wales and maroon and white for Queensland. They are on sale now at Coles if you are in need of some speciality M&Ms. No? Is it only me that thinks they so great? Only me that stocks up on limited edition M&Ms even though I have no specific use for them?
