How do you dye cotton yarn naturally?

Soak the cotton yarn in water with washing soda dissolved in the water for the mordant. Heat to simmer and continue to simmer for 30 minutes to one hour. The yarn can continue to soak in the mordant solution while the dye bath is being prepared. I use 30 grams of washing soda for every 100 grams of cotton yarn.

Can you dye 50 cotton 50 acrylic?

Acrylic cannot be dyed with any dye that works on cotton. The only two types of dye that will permanently color acrylic are disperse dyes and basic (or cationic) dyes. Disperse dyes work well on acrylic, but they cannot produce dark colors on acrylic, so that won’t work for your black sweater.

Is it cheaper to dye your own yarn?

It certainly can be cheaper to dye your own especially if you need a lot of skeins in the same colorway, for instance. If, however, you want or need a bunch of different multi colored, high end yarns, then you would have to purchase all of the various dye colors, the yarn and the equipment, which can get expensive.
