Every time you push The Oxford Punch Needle down, it pushes down a long end of yarn. When you bring The Oxford Punch Needle back up, it folds this end into a loop. There are no knots used. The tightness of all the loops packed together keeps it from unraveling.

Can you punch needle on burlap?

Jute and burlap can provide a nice rustic look to your piece, can have a similar hand to primitive linen, and is much less expensive. However, the punch needle is prone to breaking the threads of the burlap, which will cause your stitches to fall out.

What pen should I use for embroidery?

Water soluble pens, Frixion erasable pens, and pencils all work well. Do check your transfer method before marking up your entire fabric though, as there is the possibility of marks not erasing fully or coming back (in the case of water soluble or Frixion pens).
